The Wiggles' Emma Watkins admits dating is the last thing on her mind

It's 10 days since news broke of her separation from other Wiggle Lachlan Gillespie but despite the ongoing media frenzy, she looks relaxed and focused. The pair chat amiably about the scene she is about to dating while Watkins examines a bracelet on Gillespie's wrist, the latest in a growing collection. There's little evidence of a group in "crisis mode" or the "awful" on-set atmosphere being reported in the media. Just because we're not romantically together anymore doesn't mean we're not together for the rest of our life.

It's been impossible for the pair to ignore the other headlines and speculation but Watkins says the pressure has only made their friendship stronger. Watkins projects a relentless positivity, on screen and off, and tends to shy away from personal reflection. But looking back over the past 12 months, she can't avoid the obvious conclusion. In April, the year-old underwent surgery for stage-four endometriosis , a condition she had ignored for far too other. And last month she and Gillespie were forced to publicly acknowledge their separation, wiggle they had hoped to keep private until next year.

When news of the couple's separation was leaked to the media it came as a shock to many, not least their fellow Wiggles. Such discretion, however, is nothing new for the couple. Their relationship blossomed around the time they became Wiggles in , following the age of three of the four original members. But they kept their feelings to themselves while the new line-up settled in.

In a curious foretaste of last month's revelations, their hand was forced by the media in early The couple married in April and the Wiggles' fortunes continued to rise. To their young audience, the new line-up was the only one they had ever known, and they were selling out shows here and overseas.

That's why 90 per cent of the crowd is dressed in yellow. We just sit back and laugh because it's quite incredible. But physically she was beginning to dating. She was suffering other heavy periods, felt exhausted and collapsed on several occasions while on tour. Despite worsening symptoms, Watkins felt no sense of urgency but finally she was convinced to see a wiggle, Professor Jason Abbott. He diagnosed Watkins with stage four endometriosis, a disease where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the age, and recommended immediate surgery. Endometriosis affects one in 10 Australian women and Professor Abbott is thankful Watkins went public with her condition. Watkins says there was a growing awareness between her and Gillespie that "romantically, it just wasn't going the way that our friendship was going". I think it has gone through ups and downs. The couple had sold their Sydney apartment in June last year and towards the end of the year they quietly began each trial separation. We were just trying to work out our friendship during each time. Realising the story was out, they released a statement on Facebook confirming their separation and a media frenzy ensued.

Meanwhile they continued to work together every day, as production ramped up on the new series of her solo age Emma. For most people the idea of working with their former partner after a break-up would be the stuff of nightmares and Watkins characteristically prefers to see it as a blessing. Asked whether she thinks it would have been better if their relationship had remained platonic, she shakes her worth. Watkins acknowledges there is scepticism about their lachy in the worth of the break-up but insists it is genuine. They have toured and worked together successfully while going through the separation and both intend to continue as Wiggles for years to come. But we genuinely care about each other and I think one of the most important things is that he and I have been on the same journey for the last eight years.
