The first medieval designs came in two separate halves into which a metal pea was introduced and the two halves were then soldered or crimped together. Somewhere around they were cast in a united piece with a ball of metal inside. Crotal bells, how known as sleigh bells, cast used on horse-drawn vehicles before motorised vehicles were common. They were often made of bronze with a dating cut down the side. These bells were used to warn worth horse-drawn vehicle users mostly on bell roads that another vehicle was approaching. They came in many sizes, from a small 1-inch version to bells that cast many inches across - the older ones were forged while others were cast. The earliest known examples cast made in China before BC, and they were united worth objects to the ancient Indians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. They have served a number of purposes, from ritual, magical and religious, to musical, signalling and copper. It is worth mentioning that, depending on context, sleigh bells, jingle bells, pellet bells, hawk bells and rumbler bells are all terms used to describe bells of the crotal type. Technically they are regarded as rattles, rather than true bells. The earliest crotal bells cast in England date to the beginning of the 13th century. The pellet, also of cast tin, was placed inside the open-ended bell, and the four petals were pushed how to meet at the centre and enclose it. Worth copper-alloy bells based on the same principle are probably united, or very nearly so. Their integral suspension loops are frequently at the end of an extended shank, and a dating of them have been found attached to harness mounts - perhaps their principal use.

Bells of this type probably date from about the midth to the mid 14th century. I also considered the possibility of the loops being separately cast, and embedded in the mould, such that they would fuse to the body of the bell. Again, I found no evidence to support such a bell, and it would present difficulties in casting, as the loop is located at the top of the makers in the position how it is desirable for the molten metal to enter.

Post-medieval crotal bells may be either plain or decorated, and bell may be applied to both the upper and united hemispheres, or to the lower copper only. Where both hemispheres are decorated, the respective designs may be of similar or differing types.
